The Avengers is by far the biggest thing to hit movie theaters since last summer's conclusion to the Harry Potter franchise and Earth's Mightiest Heroes broke Mr. Potter's opening weekend tally as well.
But what's next for The Avengers? (Spoiler Alert!)
You just saw an Asgardian God (Loki) borrow an alien (Chitauri) invasion army from Thanos to try to take over Earth. And yes the purple-ish creature in the mid-credits scene who turns his head and smiles at the end is indeed Thanos.
This was a mighty big step at the end of the first Avengers film since now Thanos is presumably the next major villain, right? Or is he?
When thinking about the past end credits scenes since Iron Man, each had a way to build up and lead to the next film. In Iron Man, Nick Fury was introduced to the film universe and then Tony Stark was seen talking to General Ross at the end of The Incredible Hulk. These both set the stage for The Avengers Initiative seen in the closing of Iron Man 2.
Next was Thor's hammer in the end credits scene of Iron Man 2, followed by the Tesseract being revealed at the end of Thor along with Loki being sighted as one of the main antagonists outside of the Thor film. Finally, there was a teaser trailer for The Avengers at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger.
Point being, each credits scene helped build both the connection and story to the next stand-alone film. So, in theory, Thanos is a teaser to something that could potentially happen in Iron Man 3 and then followed more closely in Thor 2.
However, let's be honest in saying Thanos in Iron Man 3 makes zero sense, but teasing something about Thanos' motives could be the play to lead into Thor 2. Especially since Loki failed Thanos in The Avengers and it's payback time for Loki.
We know Loki will be "dealt with" in Thor 2 and this could also refer to Thanos' involvement since using a cosmic being like the "Mad Titan" makes the most sense in Thor (being that it is the most cosmic/fantasy hero of all The Avengers) over any of the other stand-alone hero films.
Thanos obviously wanted the Tesseract in The Avengers, otherwise he wouldn't have given Loki an army to acquire it. Now the Tesseract is in Odin's possession, in Asgard, and one has to think Thanos could be seen in the Nine Realms and possibly in Odin's vault where he could also find The Infinity Gauntlet.
Sounds like a good reason for The Avengers to assemble once again.
