The official weekend numbers are in and The Dark Knight Rises did indeed set a record for the biggest 3-day weekend opening for a 2D film with just over $160 million. Overall, it is the third highest grossing 3-day weekend of all-time after The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2, both of which were also released in 3D. The Dark Knight Rises was not in 3D at all.
However, due to the tragic event in Colorado The Dark Knight Rises could see a big showing in its second weekend. Per one of our Hollywood sources, there is a buzz around The Dark Knight Rises. The buzz says those who were effected by the shooting, and didn't go to see the movie in its opening weekend, will make their way to the theater during the film's second weekend.
Both The Avengers and Harry Potter's final chapter had big drop offs in their second weekend with The Avengers dropping 50 percent and Potter dropping 72 percent. The Dark Knight also dropped 52 percent in its second weekend, back in 2008.
Our source also said The Dark Knight Rises could only see a drop around the 35-40 percent range which would mean Christopher Nolan's third Batman film could bring in a second weekend haul of approximately $104 million. This amount would break the second weekend record set by The Avengers of $103 million, back in May.
This would be huge for the studio to break any record set by The Avengers.
